Ameliorate Sufferings Of Nigerians, Evo Synod Urges Govt
The Second Session of the Fifth Synod of the Diocese of Evo, Anglican Communion, Rivers State, ended on Sunday with a Thanksgiving Service at St. Phillip’s Anglican Church, Oroigwe District in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State.
In a communiqué released after the sessions, and signed by the Diocesan Bishop and President of Synod, The Rt. Rev. Innocent Uchechukwu Ordu; Chancellor of the Diocese, Barr. Sir Nlerum Amadi; and Clerical Synod Secretary, Rev. Canon Dr. Ebenezer Owhor, the Synod called on the Rivers State and Federal Governments to ameliorate the sufferings of Nigerians.
The Synod believed that human capital development would promote food sustainability, create jobs and reduce crime and criminality in the society.
The Synod also called on the new administration in Rivers State to prioritise the welfare of workers and retirees while expressing its gratitude to the government for its constant support of the Diocese and Churches in the State.
The Synod, however, expressed concerns about the poor conduct of the last general elections despite the humongous amount of money given to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Other areas of concern raised by the Synod include “the blatant nepotism, ethnicity and flagrant bias in appointments into public offices as observed in the last administration, while urging the new administration to make concerted efforts at healing the ethnic and religious divisions in the country.
The Synod further urged the Presidential Election Petition Courts to deliver informed and transparent judgment that would be premised on the facts and evidence before it, as this alone would satisfy the populace and establish the country among true democratic nations in the world.
Speaking during the Thanksgiving Service, the Governor of Rivers State, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, assured Rivers people of his unwavering commitment to the formulation and implementation of policies that will drive good governance and promote all-round development in the State.
“We will do all we can to do the things that will benefit our people and enhance all round development in our State,” he said.
The Governor further assured the Church that he would stay true to his Christian faith by stating that ‘I will continue to uphold the Christian virtues and strive to live in the tenets of my Christian beliefs’.
He re-echoed his administration’s desire to promote youth empowerment and invest in massive agricultural programmes.
The Governor concluded by appreciating the bishop and the entire Evo diocesan community for their prayers, which, he stated, saw him through in the last elections.
Earlier in the Service, the Bishop of Esan Diocese, Rt. Rev. Gabriel Elabor, who delivered his sermon on the topic: “That Wonderful Name of Jesus,” with text from Phil. 2:5–11, stated that the name of Jesus saves, rescues and salvages mankind from all situations.
The Preacher further identified power, authority, confidence and victory as some things that make the name of Jesus unique in all the world.
The highpoint of the service was the special empowerment of Women and Students by the Evo Diocesan Council of Knights with business starter packs and scholarships, respectively.
Governor Fubara took the only lesson in the Service as Bishop Ordu led the visiting Bishop and the team of Clergy to pray for the Governor, the Speaker of the House of Assembly and other top officials of the Rivers State Government present.
