RSHA May Review Public Works Utility Law

The Rivers State House of Assembly may review the Public Works Utility Law, 9, of 2012 to attract strong penalty on those involved in the stealing of manholes covers in the State.
The review of the Public Works Utility Law is part of the consideration of the Rivers State House of Assembly Adhoc Committee on removal of manhole covers.
The committee warned those involved in the stealing of manholes in the State to stay off or face prosecution.
The Chairman, Adhoc committee on manholes, Oko Jumbo Victor, gave the warning during a meeting with Stakeholders on Friday at the Assembly complex.
Jumbo, who is the Lawmaker representing Bonny constituency in the State Assembly, said “it is not going to be business as usual for those involved in the stealing and buying of manholes in the state”.
He stated that parts of the resolution of the meeting is to invite community leaders where the manholes are stolen, scrap and metal dealers to further sensitize their youths over the issues.
According to him, “the public works utility law no. 9, 2012 will be reviewed to attract strong penalty on those involved in the stealing of manhole covers”.
The Commissioners for Justice, Zachoius Adango, and Transport, Jacobson Nbina, in their separate contributions during the meeting, said there is need to set up a group of tax-force to help monitor offenders to curb the menace in the society.
According to them, the move to constitute a tax-force is also to clampdown on those selling and buying of scrap metals in the state.
Mr Adango noted that the Public works Utility protection law should have 5 years jail term rather than the one year stipulated in the law.
