For the Governor of Rivers State, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, governance is about the people. And that is why last Tuesday, he unveiled over 15 luxury buses that will ferry the masses free of charge around town.
The new free mass transit, it was learnt by The Tide Metro was the outcome of the organised labour’s meeting with the governor shortly after he assumed office. During that meeting, Governor Fubara promised the labour leaders of plans to cushion the pains faced by workers following removal of petroleum subsidy.
Recall that President Bola Tinubu on assuming seat announced the removal of petroleum subsidy, which inadvertently jacked up the price of fuel, which sells between N500 to N520 per litre as against N190 in the past.
Excited with the humane approach of government and the gesture, labour quickly gave kudos to the governor.
The buses are expected to reduce the financial pressure faced by workers and the general public on paying transport fares around town. The buses are expected to ply 15 routes from Aba Road to Oyigbo, Rumuokoro to Mile 3, from Education Bus Stop to Rumuokoro and to Lagos Bus Stop.
Other routes are Ada George to Location Bus Stop, Eleme Junction to Choba, Eleme Junction to Secretariat and Secretariat to Old PH Township, among others.
Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Joint Negotiation Council (JNC) , Comrade Emecheta Chuku, said the action of Governor Fubara has given respite and hope to the masses.
Emecheta thanked the governor for the gesture, saying, “We are happy because after labour met him, he showed commitment and it will have a multiplier effect.”
