Rivers State Government has assured its continued delivery of the social contract with the people of the state to achieve a dependable governance.
This follows its introduced of the Free Transport Scheme targeted at cushioning the effects of the economic challenges faced by residents of the state as occasioned by the fuel subsidy removal.
The State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, made the submission during the Flag-Off of the Free Transport Intervention Scheme held at the Rivers State Transport Company Complex, in Port Harcourt, Tuesday.
In a Statement signed by the Head of Press, Deputy Governor’s Office, Owupele Benebo, the Governor, who was represented by the Deputy Governor, Prof. Ngozi Nma Odu, insisted that the State Government was not only aware, but concerned with the hardships the fuel subsidy removal had meted on the residents.
Fubara stated that the concern necessitated the decision to initiate the intervention, and expressed hope that with the partnership of the people, it would meet its target.
According to him, the introduction of the free transport was in line with the social contract his administration had with the people of the state who he said gave him the mandate to serve.
“For us, it will always be a promise made and  a promise kept. This administration will continue to work for the interest of the state”, he said.
While urging the operators of the buses to show diligence and commitment to their duties, the Governor called on the users and the public to see the intervention as a gift to be treasured.
In his remarks, the State Commissioner for Transport,  Dr. Jacobson Nbina, lauded Governor Fubara for the gesture, informing that the 17 buses would commute people free of charge at the designated routes.
