The Vice Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, Prof. Kabiru Bala, has said that credible elections could lead to good governance, adding that the electoral process must be sanitised  if Nigerians want wholesome, free and fair elections.
Bala advocated for more engagement of academics during the electioneering processes for sustainable elections in Nigeria.
He made the remark during the 3rd international conference tagged ‘Beyond Sustainable Elections: Interrogating The Challenges Of Leadership And Governance In Nigeria’ organised by the Department of Political Science and International Studies in collaboration with Mambayya House, Aminu Kano Centre for Democratic Studies, held in Zaria.
The Vice-Chancellor, who said 95 percent of ABU staff who participated in the electioneering processes did well, added that academics, politicians, civil servants and many people who participated in the general elections honestly carried out their duties.
Bala urged Nigerians to be more honest and resist vote buying and other misconduct during elections.
Earlier, Head of the Department of Political Science and International Studies, ABU, Dr. Rahanatu Lawal, said getting elections right has the potential of producing worthy leaders and bringing about good governance.
Lawal said the conference would offer insight into the challenges of successive elections in Nigeria and challenges of using technology during the conduct of 2023 elections.
