In commemoration of this year’s Democracy Day, President Bola Tinubu will make a nationwide broadcast by 7am today.
This was contained in a statement issued yesterday by Director of Information, State House, Abiodun Oladunjoye.
The statement enjoined television and radio stations, and other electronic media outlets to hook up to the network services of the Nigerian Television Authority and Radio Nigeria for the broadcast.
This would be the first official nationwide broadcast to Nigerians by President Tinubu since he assumed office on May 29, 2023.
Recall that Tinubu was one of the pro-June 12 protagonists who fought the military for annulling the June 12, 1993 presidential election that was adjudged the freest and fairest in the political history of the country.
The election was won by late Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola but was annulled by the military junta led by General Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida (retd).
Abiola later died in detention while fighting for the restoration of his mandate.
It took several years of struggle by pro-June 12 activists before the Federal Government under the immediate past President, Muhammadu Buhari, recognised and honoured Abiola posthumously as the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Federal Republic of Nigeria.
The Buhari administration also declared June 12 as Democracy Day, in commemoration of the June 12, 1993 political watershed.
Meanwhile, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rep. Femi Gbajabiamila has congratulated Nigerians for their unwavering support for the nation’s democracy as they mark this year’s Democracy Day.
Gbajabiamila in a statement signed by his media aide, Lanre Lasisi, said “this year’s Democracy Day is worth celebrating because it is a unique milestone in the nation’s democratic journey with the election of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, a thoroughbred democrat, who is noted for his tenacious defence of democracy.”
The Speaker said that “his joy stems from the fact that Nigerians are set to appreciate the true meaning of democracy because the man in the saddle today is a product of democracy and someone who understands and appreciates the tenets of democracy and the value it brings to the table of the populace.”
He said that as a true democrat who was involved in the struggle for the return of democracy to the country and has finally assumed the position of authority,
“Tinubu will not shy away from bringing to bear the dividends of democracy Nigerians have been yearning for.”
Gbajabiamila also expressed his appreciation to Nigerians as they continue to support the country’s return to democracy by building its processes without wavering since 1999.
Urging Nigerians to remain united in the face of the socio-economic and political challenges facing the country, Gbajabiamila also called for prayers for the country’s leaders for God’s guidance and wisdom to overcome the many challenges confronting the country.
