A Port Harcourt based lawyer, Mr. Endurance Akpelu, has called on pastors and other religious leaders to check the rising rate of broken homes across the Nigerian federation.
Mr. Akpelu, who stated this while speaking with newsmen in Port Harcourt at the weekend expressed regrets and noted that incalculable damage was being done to the nucleus of the society.
He said that the spate of broken homes, especially among young couples had reached an alarming level.
He pointed out that unless the society did something urgently, juvenile delinquency would be on the increase.
Mr. Akpelu remarked that the preponderance of delinquent children came from broken homes.
He accused parents of not living to their billing.
He explained that the gross negligence by parents in failing to educate their children on the basic principles of marriage had left so much to be desired.
Mr. Akpelu said the society would continue to bear the brunt of the negligence by both the homes and the religious institutions.
He described marriage as one of the greatest institutions created by God.
He noted that the society would be a better place if married couples paid great attention to the preservation of their marriages.
According to him, both customary and high courts are replete with petition for divorce.
He blamed the trend on lack of tolerance among young couples.
Mr. Akpelu pointed out that couples must be prepared before they embarked on the journey and said it was for better for worse.
