Fire: Rivers Cautions Residents On Use Of Electrical Appliances
The Rivers State Commissioner for Special Duties, Hon Ndubusi Okere, has reiterated the need for residents in the state to be cautionary and extra careful in their use of electrical appliances both at home and offices by ensuring that all electrical gadgets and sockets are always put off before they leave their home or offices to forestall any form of fire outbreak.
Okere, who made the call after inspecting a scene of fire incident that occurred around Wimpey -Elioparanwo link road in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of the state, however, thanked God that there was no life lost in the incident.
The commissioner thanked the Federal Fire Service team in the state who promptly answered to the distress calls and swiftly helped to put out the fire.
Ndubuisi said that the prompt arrival of the firefighters to the scene of the fire was made possible by the array of smooth roads and flyovers constructed by Governor Nyesom Wike in the state.
Also speaking at the scene, the Chairman of Obio/Akpor Local Government Council, Barrister George Ariolu, who described the event as unfortunate, advocated for the sensitisation of residents of the state by the Ministry of Information and Communications, and other relevant bodies, especially National Orientation Agency (NOA) so as to avert future fire incidents.
One of the victims who gave his name is Meshack Chukwu, said that he was at his place of work when he got a call of the fire but before he could get home, all his belongings had been burnt by fire except a rosary.
According to some eyewitnesses, who chose to be anonymous, the fire started as a result of electrical surge from one of the rooms in the compound.
He alleged that some appliances may have been left on before public power was restored.
