Rivers State Deputy Governor, Dr. Ipalibo Harry Banigo, has said that it was important for citizens and governments at all levels to encourage and respect the rights and dignity of the people.
Banigo stated this in her goodwill message in Government House, Port Harcourt, last Friday, to commemorate the International Human Rights Day 2022.
The deputy governor said the Universal Declaration of Human Rights adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 1948 underscored the importance of promoting and recognising human rights in all ramifications.
She said the theme for this year’s celebration: “Dignity, Freedom, and Justice for All”, was in consonance with the non-discriminatory and gender-friendly posture of Governor Nyesom Wike-led administration in the state, adding that Rivers people have continued to enjoy dividends of democracy and unfettered freedom since the inception of this administration.
It would be recalled that the 10th of December marks the end of the 16 days of activism that was launched on the 25th of November, which was the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.
