RVHA Refers Two Reports To Committee
The Rivers State House of Assembly has referred two reports before it to the various committees to work on and report back to the house.
The reports are Auditor General’s Report on the Accounts of Rivers State Government for the Fiscal Year Ended December 31, 2021 and a petition against Setraco Construction Nigeria Company on the alleged dumping of chemical and hazardous materials on a plantain plantation.
The Committee on Public Accounts, and Committee on Environment, respectively, were directed to handle the reports.
The House had received the report submitted by the auditor general of Rivers State on the financial statements and accounts for the fiscal year 2021 during the last sitting of the House.
While presenting the report, House Leader, Hon. Martins Amaewhule, in his submission on the floor of the Assembly, stated that it was the right of the Legislature to look into the fiscal audit report of the state.
After his submission, which was seconded by Hon. Christian Ahiakwo, the House, however, referred the report to the Committee on Public Accounts.
The House also deliberated on a report submitted by the Committee on Environment, which was on a petition by a law firm: Amachree & Amachree Solicitors, against Setraco, a construction company on the alleged dumping of chemical and other hazardous materials on a plantain plantation along Rumuji and Ndele axis of the East-West Road.
The House Leader, Hon Martins Amaewhule, during debate on the petition, decried the inability of companies to meet up with their corporate social responsibilities (CSRs)to the communities.
On his part, the Deputy Leader, Hon. Bariye Deeyaa, stated that the report was not detailed enough on the environmental impact assessment of the area.
In his final submission, the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Ikuinyi-Owaji Ibani, referred the report back to the House Committee on Environment to do a more comprehensive report and revert to the House.
