Nigerians Proffer Solutions To Sports Improvement
The dwindling performance of Nigerian athletes in competitions in recent times has raised concern in the minds of stakeholders in the sport industry.
It is heartbreaking that Nigeria anthem will not be heard in the World Cup in Qatar later this month.
It is of note that sporting activities in the country seem to be going to the lowest ebb with only few Nigerians making waves.
Head Coach Shining Stars Football Club of Oyigbo Local Government Area, Rivers State, Gift John, attributed the situation to lack sports education in Nigeria.
According to him, in other countries, there is what they call Sports Education, where they teach the importance of Sports.
“In European countries Sports education is taken very seriously, it helps to build the people who want to go into sports. In Canada for example, they recruit athletes from the primary schools and groom them. In fact, from age two, they have started training on how to play golf, how to swim and train in gymnastics” John said.
A sports enthusiast Ekene Nwachukwu, said scholarship should given to athletes who are performing well, noting that such will encourage others to have interest in sports.
“When I was a student in the United States of America, I combine both sports and education, because they make their sports policy flexible”, Nwachukwu said.
A professional footballer Chukwu Victor, said Government and private sector should invest in sports, adding that the country have abundant talents but to discover them is major problem.
He urged coaches to go to the grassroots to identify athletes, especially in the area they can do better.
