The Ekiti State Government has reiterated its commitment to the welfare of victims of natural disasters and vulnerable people in order to make life more meaningful for them.
The Deputy Governor, Chief Monisade Afuye, stated this while distributing relief materials provided by the Federal Government to assist the victims of flood in the state at the Abiodun Adetiloye Hall, Ado Ekiti
Chief Afuye, who listed some of the relief materials given to the beneficiaries to include foodstuff, mats, palm oil, and vegetable oil, expressed the readiness of the Ekiti State Government to always collaborate with government agencies, corporate organisations and other donors that are willing to render assistance to vulnerable people to be self-sufficient and prevent them from becoming a burden to the society.
Afuye, who commended the Federal Government’s gesture, called on corporate organizations and well-meaning individuals to emulate such in order to create a virile society.
Chief Afuye, however, called for more relief materials from the Federal Government in order to capture those who were yet to benefit from the government support programmes and urged others who were not yet captured to exercise patience as the State Government would not hesitate to do the needful as soon as more relief materials are acquired.
In his words,”these relief materials were purposely donated and distributed to improve the livelihoods of Internally Displaced Persons in the state, also to help beneficiaries become self-sufficient, moreso the State Government is always interested in assisting vulnerable people in reclaiming their normal lives rather than being a burden in the state”.
The Ekiti State number two citizen urged residents and beneficiaries to desist from the habit of dumping refuse in drains, stating that such could lead to blockage of the waterways and wreak havoc.
She also encouraged the people to prevent factors that could ignite fire outbreaks and urged them to make good use of the items distributed to them.
In his remark, the NEMA Director General, Ahmad Habib, represented by Mr Olarewaju Kidiri, revealed that the provision of the relief materials was aimed at reaching 3,000 victims but only 1, 000 victims were captured in the first phase and thereby expressed appreciation to God as there was no loss of life recorded during the disaster.
