A body under the aegis of Licensed Electrical Contractors Association of Nigeria (LECAN) has canvassed that power sector reforms in Nigeria should not be politicised but professionally driven to enhance effective service delivery.
A national officer of the body, Engr Joe Aibangbee, made the advocacy in Port Harcourt at the weekend during a state congress to herald a new executive for the association in Rivers State.
Aibangbee, who was represented by the Zonal Coordinator of the body, Chief Afuedeli Moses at the event, pointed out that the conceding of electricity services and contracts to none professionals rather than experts was a major challenge and disincentive in the power sector, as it encourages sub-standard service delivery, poor value systems and compromises which put the lives of the people at great risk.
He said critical stakeholders in the power sector should be allowed to put in their professional knowhow in service delivery to move the sector forward.
The election, which was held at Taland’s Place in Port Harcourt, had the following as new executive officers of the association in Rivers State, including Engr Lekia Emmanuel (chairman); Asuquo Effiong Udoh (vice chairman); Order Nornubari Kor (secretary); Elder Mission Sagbara (treasurer); Daniel Peter Udoh (financial secretary); and Ifeanyi Love Omokuwho, who is to serve as public relations officer.
In his remarks, Chairman of the Electoral Committee, Oluwole Samuel, commended members of LECAN in Rivers State for their peaceful conduct during the election, and urged them to live up to the mandate of guaranteeing electricity services in safe hands.
Also speaking, the Special Assistant to the National President of the body on Special Duties, Elder Friday Kor, congratulated the newly elected executive of the body in Rivers State, and urged them to promote professionalism among members.
He noted that most electrical defects in construction projects were caused by flouting of safety and precautionary measures by quacks to cut corners.
Earlier, the Chairman of the event, Elder Emmanuel Okas Wike, had tasked members of the association to be selfless and committed in the delivery of electricity services, and cautioned against the activities of non-experts in contract services which exposes the society to avoidable risks and dangers.
