The Rivers State Government has assured internally displaced persons (IDPs) in the various camps in the state that they would not feel the food impact of the flood as a result of the current disaster.
Chairman, Rivers State Flood Management Task Force, Dr. George Nwaeke, said this at the weekend at Ahoada while delivering more food items to some IDPs camps in Ahoada East and Ahoada West local government areas.
Nwaeke said the state government was fully prepared to ensure that no one in the camps lack access to food and toiletries.
“I am here with members of the committee for us to hand over some additional food items to people of Ahoada West and Ahoada East local government areas.
“You recall that sometime this week, and also previous weeks, we were here to give some food items to the displaced people of the local government areas.
“Today, we are here again to handover additional materials to these IDPs”.
He said the state Governor, Chief Nyesom Wike, had made adequate provisions for the internally displaced persons.
“I want to thank God for Governor Wike who has continuously provided for the people of these areas that are currently displaced by the flood.
“I want to assure you that we will continue to do this with all the funds that have been released. We will ensure that the people of these areas do not feel the food impact of this disaster”, he said.
Also, in addition to the hundreds of bags of rice and garri, cartons of noodles and hundreds of tubers of yams, the committee also handed over large amount of cash to both the chairman of Ahoada East and Ahoada West local government areas.
In their responses while taking delivery of the items, Chairmen of Ahoada West Local Government Council, Dr Hope Ikiriko; and Ahoada East Local Government Council, Hon Ben Eke; commended Governor Nyesom Wike for his consistency in the provision of relief materials to the IDPs.
They said the items would be delivered to persons directly affected by the flood.
According to Ikiriko, “I just want to thank the governor for this gesture. He has been consistent from the first day he formed the committee, and the time he told Rivers people, he has released the money.
“We are seeing the evidence of all these”, he said.
Ikiriko said the items would get to the camps, adding “all the camps will be serviced. I am personally supervising the distribution.
“We are not delegating the distribution of relief materials. This work is like a relay race: When they bring it from Port Harcourt, we take it from here to all the camps, one after another”, he said.
