A medical doctor has cautioned members of the public to be cautious over meningitis, as the disease features many symptoms that may be misconstrued for other ailments like malaria.
Speaking in a live radio programme in Port Harcourt earlier this week, Dr. Success Ogbangba said the ailment is common among children and has killed over 11million people worldwide.
She described meningitis as a disease where the brain inflames and goes with vomiting, high fever, stiff neck, coma, and death at last.
Ogbangba said the disease is more prevalent in sub-saharan Africa, and more found in the Northern part of the country.
“Meningitis is more experienced in the Northern part of the country, but of recent the belt is expanding, and that is why people should be alert,” stressed.
She explained that symptoms manifests when someone with the ailment begins to avoid bright light and is vomiting with high fever, adding that it can be acute and sub acute.
Aside children, the medical doctor said adults too are vulnerable since it can be infectious as well.
Ogbangba urged the public to always consult a medical doctor or visit a hospital if such symptoms manifest, while condemning those who resort to prayers and other spiritual healing which most times complicate condition of victims.
One way to prevent meningitis is to eat well to strengthen the immune system, and to keep the environment clean, Dr. Ogbangba maintained.
