Lawyer Cautions Against Claim Of Free Legal Documents

As land developers continue to lure intending property purchasers into land transaction via claims of issuance of free legal documents, a legal practitioner, Barrister Tekena Lawson, has said such is just a mere market strategy.
Lawson, said this when he spoke with The Tide in Port Harcourt, yesterday.
He said he was worried after a certain Estate developer via a Port Harcourt based Radio station told unsuspecting members of the public that one of the benefits of transacting directly with them was to avoid exorbitant fees by lawyers.
Rather, he informed that Estate developers are the ones milking members of the public dry in terms of free charges and payment.
He hinted that some of them trick people into the business under the guise of free legal documents provision whereas the fees have been imbedded into the business thrice above the real legal fee.
According to him, the Estate developers are mere business operators seeking for their daily bread and not destiny helpers as they claim.
He also pointed out that such comments was tantamount to blackmail and threatened to institute a proper law suit against such Estate developers should such be repeated.
“Lawyers’ fees are fixed and regulated by a rules and regulations. So, if there are any one to short-change the members of the public, it should be non lawyers in the system “, he said.
The legal icon also recalled how one lady was tricked to pay double of the actual value of the property from an Estate owner around the Port Harcourt International Airport axis and added that it took the intervention of a lawyer to salvage the situation.
He maintained that lawyers remained the best in the property transaction environment due to their training and professionalism.
On the issue of swindling members of the public in Estate business, he called on the Government to ensure that each Estate developer got the approval of how many buildings and persons to be registered with them a time in order to avoid been swindled.
He, however, expressed regrets that Estate developers have abandoned their cure mandate of estate development and have taken up the duties of lawyers.
