Protect Govt Facilities From Scavengers, Ariolu Urges Obio/Akpor Residents
Chairman of Obio/Akpor Local Government Council, Barrister George Ariolu, has urged residents to ensure government facilities within their localities were properly safeguarded and protected to avoid vandalism from scavengers, leading to damage and subsequent repairs of such properties.
He said the role of government in governance was to ensure that quality programmes and policies were enacted to make room for sustainable development which would enhance and encourage standard of living and ease of doing business amongst residents.
Ariolu stated this in his address at the Council Headquarters, Rumuodomaya, during the official handover of 500KVA transformers to Rukpakulusi and Rumuodunwere communities, respectively.
He emphasised that service delivery was the basis for which democracy exists, calling on leaders of communities to continue to increase support for the administration of the Peoples Democratic Party at the local government and state levels.
According to him, the focus of his administration was to ensure dividends of democracy were evenly distributed to the masses through good governance.
Ariolu assured that his administration would not fail in ensuring that it fulfils promises made to the electorate during the electioneering period.
He further revealed that the council, while making sure demands of the people were met, can only do so with the availability of funds, urging community leaders to lead campaigns for the payment of levies and taxes by business operators in their domains.
The council boss, during the handover of the 500KVA transformers to benefitting communities, reminded them that it was the responsibility of the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company (PHED)to provide and maintain electrical facilities, adding that the council only intervenes because the people were its responsibility.
In another development, Ariolu commended the people of Rumunduru for their peaceful disposition which has contributed to the growth and development of the local government.
He said development cannot be achieved in any society where restiveness thrives, adding that peace and progress was the platform upon which such development can be attained.
While emphasising on the need to add value to the people, he stressed that his administration would continue to build human capital development and invest in the people such that its multiplier effect would last the test of time.
He, however, urged members of the Rumunduru Town Council to be sensitive to the programmes and policies as well as participate in activities of his administration that seeks to promote peace, progress, unity and development of the people
