The authorities of the University of Port Harcourt, Choba in Rivers State, has disagreed with an online report that grasses have taken over the main gates of the institution following the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
The university, in a swift reaction, described such online report as false and fabricated lies to curry public attention.
Astatement signed by Public Relations Officer of the university, Dr Sam Kpenu, urged the general public to disregard the said publication as it was untrue.
“The attention of the University of Port Harcourt has been drawn to an on-line report credited to www.opr.newswith the caption: ‘ASUU Strike: Weeds take over gate at UNIPORT’. This is lacking in facts.
“The university has two gates leading to the main campus called the University Park, which is located along the East-West Road and the other at Delta Park by the ChobaJunction. Both are beautifully adorned in the university colours.
“The on-line blog must have referred to a gate that is not in use, in fact, it is not a thoroughfare to anywhere in or out of the university.
“At a time the University of Port Harcourt is riveting on her achievements, especially as the Top 5 University in Nigeria, bad press like this can be understood.
“As a standard policy, the university welcomes inquiries from the mass media and other interested persons to seek or confirm reports so as to avoid being marked as mere spoilers.”
