The Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Limited (SPDC) is not planning to pull out of Nigeria as being rumoured in the country.
The Country Head and Director, Corporate Relations of the company, Mr. Igo Weli, made this clarification in Owerri, the Imo State capital while fielding questions from newsmen.
Addressing the participants of the 2022 RoW Media Engagement from Imo and Abia states, Weli said that the media should help the company counter some of the rumours being peddled by some misinformed people in the host communities in the Niger Delta region.
According to him, some of the problems confronting Shell from the host communities include, vandalisation of oil pipelines and sabotage of wellheads in order to seek compensation, attacks on workers, stealing of crude oil, illegal refining of stolen crude, and kidnapping workers for ransom, among other things.
Weli said that the economic recession that cuts across the world, which include Nigeria, equally affects the company, adding that Shell, which used to boast of over 4,000 workers, now about 2,000 staff.
He pointed out that the company was operating in a difficult environment in Nigeria compared to other countries.
Weli reminded the participants that Shell operates in about 75 countries across the world, but added that the operating environment in Nigeria was concerning to shareholders.
