CSOs, SPDC, NOSDRA Inspect Site Of Two Oil Spills In Bodo
A coalition of civil society organisations (CSOs), Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) and National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA) have visited two spills, which occurred in Bodo Community, Gokana Local Government Area on Monday, August 1, 2022.
In a series of posts on Twitter, the Youth and Environmental Advocacy Centre said its One Million Youth Volunteers Network of Human Rights Defenders and Promoters in the Niger Delta discovered the incidents.
The advocacy centre also said the oil installation belongs to the SPDC, and urged the Federal Ministry of Environment and relevant agencies to take steps to clean up the spill and pay compensation, where necessary.
However, SPDC has confirmed the oil spill incident in Bodo.
In a short statement, the oil giant said that the Joint Investigation Visit (JIV) team was denied access to the site of the incident to ascertain the cause and extent of the spill.
SPDC spokesman, Michael Adande, emphasised that the affected Trans Niger Pipeline had not pumped crude since mid-June.
But some of the civil society organisations, which visited the oil spill site in Bodo, last Thursday, said that they were working to ensure that they monitor the process to ensure a proper investigation is carried out on the 24 and 28 inches pipeline affected by the spill.
Isaac Green of Social Action, who was on ground to monitor the JIV by SPDC contractors and other regulatory bodies and the Ministry of Environment, said the spill was significant.
Green further asked the multinational oil company to do the right thing in other to avert further spills.
On his part, the Executive Director of Civil Rights Council, Rivers State, Sabastine Kpalap, called on the IOC and the Nigeria government to take a drastic step to stop the spill.
SPDC was, however, allowed by the Bodo community to carry out the joint investigation to the spill site after some talk with representatives of the community.
A visit to the site shows that crude oil was still flowing out as at yesterday afternoon, while personnel of NOSDRA were working tirelessly to contain the spill.
