We’ll Pay Attention To Agriculture – Guber Aspirant
The gubernatorial candidate of the Young Progressive Party (YPP), Engr Danagogo Wenike-Briggs, has said that plans are underway to develop the Agricultural sector of Rivers State so as to ensure food security.
Wenike-Briggs, who disclosed this in an interview with The Tide in Port Harcourt, yesterday, said young people need to be encouraged to consider agriculture as an alternative means of livelihood.
According to him, agriculture can turn the economic tide around for the better for any people or government that is sensitive about growth and development.
He said the sector is very large to generate income needed for the transformation of the economy of any serious-minded people.
“We will consider agricultural development. We want our people to think less on consumption and more on production.
“We must make sure that our government will provide everything needed for a safe landing in agriculture”, he said.
The guber aspirant explained further that the agricultural sector has the capacity to replace the beleaguered oil sector, but expressed regrets that no government has given it adequate attention.
For security, he hinted that there will be a foreign partnership that will make it a reality, “so that the labour of farmers will not be in vain”.
The civil engineer turned politician emphasized that food security will also be possible by serious government’s involvement in the means of production, adding that “you cannot secure what you do not have.
“Before talking of food security, we must first and foremost talk about its production. That way, we stand at a better vintage position to discuss other things that are incidental to it.
“That is why we need all of you, including the media to join us”, he said.
He also hinted on boosting the aquatic life of the state to give relief to the riverine areas in order to boost their economic activities.
The Tide learnt that about 80 per cent of poultry products consumed in the state come from Ibadan, the Oyo State capital..
