The management of the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) has dismissed as fake a viral video making the rounds on social media linking the university with a purported ‘witchcraft’ professor.
A statement signed by the institution’s Public Relations Officer, Dr Sam Kpenu, at the weekend, said that the university has nothing to do with fake individual in the video, and has no record of any staff involved in such incident.
The statement read, “The attention of the Management of the University of Port Harcourt has been drawn to an online viral video showing a man accused of witchcraft by a faceless online blog.
“The report described the accused as a Professor of Theatre and Film Studies in the University of Port Harcourt.
“The university wishes to state, in clear terms, that the story is fake, and that the man in that viral video is not a staff of the University of Port Harcourt.
“The management views this falsehood as a cooked up story to denigrate the university, describing it as the handiwork of detractors which may not be unconnected with the present towering reputation of the institution.
“Members of the public are, therefore, enjoined to discountenance such malicious publication.
“Management wishes to reiterate that it welcomes inquiries as the institution runs an open-door policy and called on the public to always verify their stories before publication.
“Meanwhile, management wishes to thank members of the public for their continued faith in the institution and for believing in it as socially responsible”, Kpenu said.
