Expert Wants More Veterinary Doctors In Civil Service
A veterinary doctor in Rivers State has made a passionate appeal to the Rivers State Governor, Chief Nyesom Wike to employ more veterinary doctors into the state civil service to complement and actualise his dream in that sector.
The Chairman of the Nigeria Veterinary Medical Association in the state, Dr Bolaji Ajayi made the appeal while briefing newsmen in Port Harcourt at the weekend. Ajayi explained that the state government saw the deplorable state of the Veterinary Clinic and Abattoir at Trans-Amadi and found it necessary to relocate and build a new and befitting veterinary clinic and even an abattoir at Mgbuoshimini Community but regretted that there are only two veterinary staff in the state civil service.
While thanking the state governor for keeping to his promises since assuming office by building projects and not abandoning any one so far, Ajayi said he is optimistic that the veterinary clinic project which is ongoing will be completed before the end of this administration. He opined that when this project is done, some more expert manpower especially veterinary doctors will be needed to be trained and fill the gaps the clinic will need.
Ajayi also hammered on the issue of quacks within the profession, but advised clients to always ask questions about the credibility of veterinary doctors before they patronise them. He explained that there are statutory requirements for veterinary medicine practice nationwide, like a registered clinic, identity cards, practising licence, among others. His words, “Some persons go into veterinary business because of commercial gains even when they are quacks”.
Ajayi commended the state government for looking into veterinary affairs and even advised the government to look into finding alternative means of cattle production in commercial quantities to solve the irrelevant cause of hike in the sales of meat in the market which he said is caused by insecurity in the country.
