Don Tasks Stakeholders On Environmental Protection

A university lecturer, Professor Confidence Wachukwu, has called for a change of attitude by the citizenry with a view to protecting the environment.
Wachukwu said this in an interview with newsmen in his office against the background of the just concluded World Environment Day celebration.
According to him, in order to preserve the environment for this generation and the generation yet unborn, you need to do your part and I also my part.
A good environment is about congevity,  if the environment is good, we will live longer.
A good or clean environment promotes the attainments of long and healthy life.
“In fact, the preservation of the environment calls for a change of attitude by the populance”, he said.
He expressed regrets on the manner and way people dispose and throw their empty cans and sachet water waste on the road and in the street.
On what he makes of the 2022 World Environment Day which theme is: Only One Earth; Wachukwu had this to say, “As the theme for the 2022 World Environment Day implies, it means that we should live sustainably and harmoniously with the environment”.
This is why the World Environment Day is taking place on the 5th of June 2022. Besides, given that we do not have any market where we can buy air, that is why we have to keep our environment clean and live harmoniously and sustainably with the environment”.
Wachukwu who is the current Dean of Faculty of Science of Rivers State University (RSU) and Editor-in-Chief of Journal of Nigerian Environmental Society (JNES) pointed out that several man- made activities have worsened the environment, noting that when there is water pollution, biodiversity will be moving to safer ground.
Climate change, air pollution, water pollution are man’s activities worsening the environment. Besides, when the water is polluted and coupled with the illegal oil activities or artisan refinery biodiversity will be moving to safer environment.
The former chairman of the Rivers State branch of the Nigerian Environmental Society maintained that waste should not be segregated, stressing on the need for residents of the state to bag their wastes.
The problem with waste is that we don’t segregate waste, no matter the time or situation, waste must be bagged, in other words, we must put our waste in bags before we dump it at the refuge site”.
He commended Governor Nyesom Wike for the fight against illegal oil activities and the new task force on waste disposal in Port Harcourt City and its environs.
