The Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution (PHED) Plchas said that it was partnering with the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) to rebuild the vandalised tower in Akwa Ibom State with a view to restoring power supply to Cross River State and its neighbouring Ebonyi State.
A statement signed by the management of the company in Port Harcourt, last Wednesday, said the synergy was necessary to facilitate restoration of electricity to its esteemed consumers in the affected franchise states.
The statement, made available to The Tide in Port Harcourt, said “The Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution (PHED) Plc is collaborating with the Transmission Company of Nigeria to rebuild the TCN tower vandalised at Odukpani/Ikot Epkene, Oku Iboku in Itu Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.
“The TCN Tower, T104 330KV was vandalised about two weeks ago by some unpatriotic, unscrupulous and criminally minded persons.
“Since the tower was vandalised, PHED has been worse hit by the resultant power disruption that affected its esteemed customers.
“It will be recalled that the disruption in power supply caused by the vandalised tower left the entire Calabar metropolis, other parts of Cross River State and Ebonyi State in complete darkness.
“Disturbed by the situation, the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Plc decided to support the efforts of TCN to ensure that power supply is quickly restored to its affected customers.
“Although, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) had awarded the job to a contractor for the collapsed tower to be erected, the PHED technical team moved in to combine resources with them to ensure that the pace of work is accelerated for early completion of the work.
“This move by PHED may have been informed by the need to quickly restore power and alleviate the extremely difficult situation that the vandals had subjected the good people of Cross River State to, by their act of vandalism.
“We want to assure our customers that work has, indeed, commenced to erect a new tower and we are very hopeful of power restoration in the coming days ahead.
“We use this opportunity to appreciate our customers for their understanding and steadfastness in the midst of this challenge,” the statement added.
