The Rivers Network of NGOs (RINNGOs) has disclosed plans to partner with the State Ministry of Education to set up environmental clubs in schools across the state.
The Chief Operating Officer of Rivers Network of NGOs, Dr (Mrs). Mina Ogbanga said this during a seminar in Port Harcourt.
Ogbanga said the plan was to instill in the younger ones the concept of environmental consciousness.
She said the programme has become very important in view of youth involvement in the Kpo fire or illegal oil bunkering activities.
‘‘We are going to go round and do advocacy for everybody to say no to Kpo fire.
“ I want a better life for my youth. I want a better life as a youth. I want to say no to Kpo fire, I want to protect my environment’’, she said.
Ogbanga said the seminar which was funded by the European Union (EU) and the Brutish Council was aimed at ensuring sustainable education in the state.
According to her, the project is the climate action for sustainability and environmental protection, adding that the project involves all the policy makers, the school curricula and educators.
Ogbanga who is also the Country Director of the Centre for Development and Support Initiative (CEDSI) said schools are not the only focal point as far as the programme was concerned, noting that communities would also be visited to sensitise them on the importance of environmental protection.
“Schools are not the only focal point, we have target communities. We have target IDP camps.
“Anybody who will stay in the camp out side of the shelter centre will be welcome to be part of it’’.
She said the project is to teach the communities how to protect their environment about the causes of Kpo fire, how to prevent fire and how they as individuals can protect themselves as young people and say no to Kpo fire.
“ So the young people after this training will say no, I don’t want to be part of Kpo fire’’, she said.
