Nigerians have been urged to give the country a new lease of life by considering electing Governor Nyesom Wike as President in 2023 because of his gender-friendly disposition in governance.
Grassroots politician and councilor representing Ward 13, Usokun-Degeman in Degeman Local Government Area, Hon. (Mrs) Iwayari Dede-Solomon, made the plea while exchanging views with The Tide in Port Harcourt, recently.
Hon Dede-Solomon who commended the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) under the helmsmanship of Governor Wike in Rivers State for the massive opportunity given to women at all levels of governance in the state said that the stability and good governance enjoyed by Rivers people in the present administration is directly derived from the resolve of the governor to involve women in his administration.
“When it comes to Rivers State, it is a more friendly environment, especially for we the women, because we have a gender-friendly governor who ensures that women are included in his government and he has demonstrated that by maintaining a female Deputy Governor for his two tenures and also making sure that all the Vice Chairmen of councils in the state are women”, she said, adding that “That was one factor that made away for us to be in government so we give kudos to the governor for making the ground soft for females like us to be in governance”.
According to the female grassroots lawmaker”, this demonstrates that he knows the importance of women in governance. He appreciates that the men do not know it all and cannot do it all, so bringing in women will help make things a lot easier. And that’s why we have had it so good so far in Rivers State”.
Hon Dede-Solomon averred that Governor Wike knows what is required and has what it takes to effect the kind of difference that is needed to stabilize Nigeria and get the country back on the path of social, political and economic renaissance.
She expressed the view that much of the security and economic challenges facing the country today were as a result of the exclusion of women in administration at the national level, insisting that the country cannot make much progress until. The country significantly differs to the agitation of women by giving them at last 35 percent of elective and appointive positions in Nigeria.
The female councillor urged women in Nigeria to keep up the pressure and not to relent until their demands are met, adding that having confidence in themselves and persistence in the struggle for a better deal for themselves and the country will eventually deliver victory to them.
She lauded the chairman of Degema Local Government Area, Hon. Michael John Williams and her male counterparts in the legislative assembly for the cordial working relationship and the absence of any firms of discrimination or gender bias against the female lawmakers in the running of the affairs of the council.
“I must give it to the council chairman, he has not in any way shown any form of disrespect or disregard toward the women in his government. We have so far enjoyed a very cordial working relationship anchored on mutual respect with the chairman and our colleague councilors. I believe this is a lesson they learned from the governor”, she said.
