10 More Bodies Recovered From Bonny/Bille/Nembe Jetty Inferno
Some drivers at the Bonny,Bille Nembe Jetty have alleged that 10 bodies floated four days after the fire incident at the jetty which killed more than 23 persons.
A driver who simply gave his name as Fman told The Tide at the weekend at the jetty that 10 bodies floated four days after the fire incident.
He also alleged that some bodies may have been lying at the river bed.
“It is not one or two, we counted the bodies as they floated on the river four days after”
He stressed the need for the government to set up a fire service station at the jetty as the incident could still re-occur.
Also speaking with The Tide, The Chairman Nembe waterfront unit of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria,Emmanuel Clifford Dari, said 23 corpses were recovered on the first day of the incident.
He said families came to identify the corpses for collection while some corpses were beyond recognition as they were burnt to ashes.
Emmanuel also regretted that the burnt boats were yet to be removed from the scene of the incident, adding that the situation is dangerous to their operation.
He also regretted that most of the drivers are not safety conscious. “They are not safety conscious, they just bring boats and ply.”
Emmanuel insisted that the only solution would be to run a fire service pipe round the Jetty as well as provide a fire fighting boat at the jetty, adding that the incident might occur again since they deal with fuel.
