The Alumni Association of University of Maiduguri, Plateau State chapter, has planted economic trees in some public primary schools in Jos to mark the International Women’s Day.
Speaking at the event yesterday, the secretary of the association, Mrs Comfort Zawaya, said that the gesture was part of their efforts to create awareness and sensitise school children to the importance of empowering women in the society.
The inauguration of the exercise was held at Obasanjo Model Primary school in collaboration with GoGreenPlateau, Afri Peace and Agape women.
She said that the event was also to create awareness in children on the need for mutual respect and peaceful coexistence irrespective of their gender.
She noted that women “are one of the most vulnerable groups in the society and experience limitations in fulfilling their aspirations”.
She also said that the organisation targeted tree planting in public primary schools to re-orientate school children, especially girls on their potential of becoming great in future and the importance of trees in mitigating climate change.
“We do not want a child’s aspirations to be affected because of their sex, every child should be given an opportunity to become who God wants them to be regardless of their gender,” she said.
Zawaya said that the trees were also planted in line with the 2022 theme of the day — “Gender Equality Today for a Sustainable Tomorrow” — to provide better climate for a sustainable future while nourishing the children.
Also speaking at the event, the Community Mobiliser for GoGreenPlateau, Miss Gwamkat Gwamzhi, said that the organisation was partnering with the alumni for more impact in promoting tree planting in the state to mitigate climate change.
She said that climate change had relegated many women from having access to economic empowerment, education and good health, observing that ignoring the situation would increase poverty, hunger and many unfulfilled dreams.
In her remarks, the Assistant Head Teacher of the school, Mrs Pauline Likem, thanked the alumni association and its partners for the programme.
She observed that the programme would prepare the children to be responsible and harness their potential to become great, assuring the organisers that the trees would be nurtured by the children.
International Women’s Day is celebrated on every March 8 to celebrate the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women.
