Primate Wants New Constitution For Nigeria
The Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), via its Archbishop, Metropolitan and Primate, Most Rev’d Henry Ndukuba, has called for a new Nigerian Constitution made by a sovereign representatives of the ethic nationalities of the country.
Ndukuba made the call during the Church of Nigeria Standing Committee meeting held by the Diocese of Evo at St. Andrew’s Anglican Church, Rumubokani in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area recently.
He said this has become imperative following historical records that have so far shown that the country at every critical time had a new Constitution spanning from the colonial era to political independence.
According to him, the proposed new Constitution will provide solution to some fundamental issues necessary for nurturing a united and prosperous nation.
“ We need a new citizens-made national constitution and not the amendment of a military-formulated constitution”, he said.
He also noted that the issue of Justice, equity and equality of citizens in a free and a democratic nation must remain open and frankly discussed.
Ndukuba further, said that it must undergo legislation and implemented for the survival of the country.
“We need the birth of a new Nigeria where no citizen is oppressed, rather where everyone has the right to strive for the good life. We need a nation where our collective resources are judiciously and equitably distributed for the good of all “, he said.
On the issue of banditry , insurgency, kidnapping and others, he blamed the ugly trend on politicians whom he alleged brought in foreigners in a bid to enhance their political advantage.
The foreigners, he said, can cause any kind of havoc in the country in that, they do not have affinity or stake but bent on the financial rewards of their services.
To control such and related crime , he stressed that there must be need to guard the nation’s borders against marauders and raiders.
Touching on the theme of the meeting, “The Christian’s Dual Citizenship And Responsibility”, he called on all Christians not to shy away from any civic responsibility and added that they must be active in all sectors including spirituality.
