The Regional Manager, South-South/South-East, Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Mr. Felix Abinbumi has said that the Port Harcourt International Airport was planning to start the construction of a mega shopping mall at the airport.
Abinbumi, who disclosed this recently, explained that this would generate huge revenue, and would be the first of its kind in the country as the management of the airport was making swift plans towards actualising the plan.
He spoke of how operations at the domestic terminal has been steady, adding that taking a lot of passengers was a problem as a result of limited number of operating aircraft arriving at a time.
Abinbumi said: “Domestic operations have been encouraging and tremendous. We are expecting same at the international terminal very soon.”
He revealed that location for the mall would not be a problem since there was large empty expanse of land within the airport vicinity.
Abinbumi lamented the continuous encroachment on the land by people around the area.
He added that for that reason, several letters have been written to the headquarters of the authority, saying that dialogue was ongoing.
The regional manager added that operations moved slowly during the COVID-19 in 2020,stressing that the situation remained a great challenge for the rest of the year.
Abinbumi said that in 2021, activities took a turn for the better when the restrictions of movement were lifted.
The manager equally emphasised that the airport was safe as there was a joint patrol team comprising security personnel that help keep miscreants away from the airport vicinity.
Furthermore, he stated that the CCTV cameras in the airport were reviewed regularly by the Aviation Security (AVSEC) and due punishment meted out on any culprit after withdrawing their On Duty Cards(ODC).
