The National Directorate of Employment (NDE) yesterday begun the training of 50 women in spices and seasoning production under its Women Employment Programme in Kebbi.
The Director-General, NDE, Malam Abubakar Nuhu-Fikpo, said during the training in Birnin Kebbi that the aim was to create more job opportunities and improve women socio-economic status, among others.
Nuhu-Fikpo, represented by the state’s NDE Coordinator, Alhaji Abdullahi Machika, said the women would be taught how to produce spices for pepper soup and Banga soup.
“They would also be taught how to produce cumin powder, turmeric and ginger powder, African nutmeg, clove flakes, curry powder, cinnamon, coriander, Jollof, and fried rice spices and spices for stew,” the DG said.
He noted that spices and seasoning production was an emerging area of interest that had been neglected in the past but had huge potential to generate mass employment with low capital investment.
“Considering Nigeria’s population and its large markets, there is effective demand for spices and seasoning in the country.
“Beneficiaries will also be trained on how to interface and link up with funding institutions that will be talking to them on ways to assess funds for various businesses,’’ he said.
The D-G urged the beneficiaries to pay attention and learn what they were taught in order to earn income, become employers of labour, and reduce unemployment.
A cross-section of the beneficiaries, who spoke with newsmen thanked the NDE for organising the training and called for its sustenance.
