Electoral Act: FG Reveals Next Step

The Federal Government appears not to have accepted the stance of the National Assembly on President Muhammadu Buhari’s request to amend section 84 (12) of the Electoral Act, 2022.
According to the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, the government will explore all options to find a way around it, including going to court or accepting the law as it is.
His reactions came shortly after the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting presided over by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo at the Presidential Villa, Abuja on Wednesday.
He noted that the government had three options available, part of which was to ask the legislators to reconsider their stance, including approaching the court or accepting the law as it is.
Malami also noted that while it was the responsibility of the lawmakers to legislate, if it becomes necessary, the Federal Government will exploit all options available to it.
He stated that the government was yet to take a full stand as to what it would do on the matter.
Also commenting on the extradition request by the United States government on DCP Abba Kyari, Malami insisted that the issue had generated needless controversies, affirming that the request was being processed.
He accused the media of raising undue misunderstanding around the issue, urging them to get a grip of the facts to avoid creating confusion.
