The Council of Legal Education, Nigerian Law School (CLE-NLS), Lagos Campus, yesterday issued a memorandum, directing all law students on externship to comply with ethical dress code forthwith.
The directive is contained in a memorandum signed by the southwest externship Coordinator, NLS Lagos campus, Mr Ugochukwu Kanu.
Kanu said that the memorandum directed all law students on externship to comply with the provisions of Rule 5 parapgraph 1(a)(b) of the Code of Conduct for students of the Nigerian Law School.
The Tide reports that the memorandum is coming on the heels of complaints by judiciary stakeholders on the dress code adopted by some NLS students currently on court attachment.
He said that the CLE-NLS expressed dissatisfaction with the reports from stakeholders and states.
“Recall that on February 23, during the NLS Lagos campus externship induction, students were expressly briefed on the acceptable mode of dressing to the courts and law firms respectively; other NLS campuses also had the same briefing.
“Irrespective of the above efforts, we have been besieged with embarrassing and shameful reports from judges and practitioners of law students’ improper dressing and conducts unbecoming of aspirants to the bar ,” he said.
According to him, the approved dress code for NLS law students on externship is:
“Black suit (not waist coat), white shirt, black tie, black shoes, black socks and black belt, for male students, and black skirt, black jacket, white shirt and black shoes for female students.
“From today, March 29, 2022, any NLS student who does not appear in the above regulation attire as contained above, will be issued a query and be made to face disciplinary action which may extend to repeating the entire extern ship,” he warned.
Kanu further stated that the CLE-NLS had empowered legal practitioners and the Nigerian Bar Association of various branches to report any erring student(s) in this regard.
