MWUN Declares Terminal Operators Capitalists

The leadership of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has accused terminal operators in Nigerian seaports as capitalists in dealing with the workers.
According to MWUN, terminal operators seek to ‘make money’ at the detriment of Dockworkers who work daily in the Ports to earn their incomes.
President, MWUN, dockworkers Branch, Comrade Ibrahim Ohize, stated this in Port Harcourt during an interview.
Comrade Ohize, who was in Port Harcourt during the recent MWUN  Eastern Ports 5th District Quadrennial Dockworkers Branch election, said, the union would ensure that the welfare of dockworkers is implemented by their employees.
Ohize further said the  union would also ensure that the workers’ condition of service signed by Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) would be implemented to the letter to better the welfare of dockworkers.
“We shall ensure that the terminal operators and other agencies comply with the better working conditions, and welfare of all Nigerian dockworkers in the nation’s seaports”, he said.
Ohize, who decried the low traffic in the nation’s Ports, called on the management of Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) to increase the number of vessels berthing in Eastern Ports in order to create jobs for dockworkers.
“We do not have enough vessels coming to the Eastern Ports like Tin Can and Apapa Ports. We want NPA to increase the  volume of traffic so that more jobs would be created for the dockworkers”, he stated.
The MWUN boss described dockworkers in the nation’s seaports as key to the sector, and advised them to be more committed to their duties.
Comrade Ohize charges  the workers to shun act of hooliganism and all forms of anti-social behaviours in the Ports and with their employees, urging them to rather exhibit hard work.
He also used the opportunity to call on the newly elected officers of the union drawn from the four Eastern Ports, comprising Calabar, Onne, Rivers Port, Warri and Akwa Ibom to “work as a team and carry every member along, and for them not to exhibit sentiment and tribalism as leaders.
