Commissioner Tasks Surveyors On ‘Kpo Fire’

Rivers State Commissioner for Housing, Elder Tasie Chinedu Nwabueze, has called on Quantity Surveyors in the state to join hands with the state to fight illegal oil bunkering popularly known as “kpo fire.
He said this in Port Harcourt during an investiture ceremony of the Nigerian Institute of Quantity Surveyors Rivers State Chapter.
The commissioner, who was represented by Mr. Emmanuel Douglas, said the support of all stakeholders are needed to check the proliferation of artisanal refineries which is responsible for the back soot.
According to him, the environment is all about our livelihood and the future generations, nothing that anything that will destroy it should be avoided.
He commended the institute for recognising the importance of the ministry in the development of the building industry.
Meanwhile, National President of the Nigerian Institute of Quantity Surveyors, Olayemi Shonubi, has called on the Rivers State chapter to reach-out to all the nooks and crannies of the state with a view to enlightening the people on the import6ance of the profession to societal development.
Speaking at the investiture ceremony, he said the task before the new leadership is enormous, adding that time has come for members of the society to know the importance of quantity surveyors, especially in the construction industry.
Also speaking, the Chairman of the Rivers State Chapter of the institute, Benjamin Woke said his administration will focus on the creation of awareness on the importance of the profession in the state.
Woke said a skills acquisition programme will be launched for members especially those wishing to acquire skills in the oil and gas industry,.
He said all incidences of quackry will be tackled and called for supports.
Earlier, the Chairman, Investiture Planning Committee, Jamaibi Thanks Numbere said the ceremony was a biennial event that ushers in a new senate to steer the ship of the institute for two years.
He said the theme of the programme which was “Dispute the solution in construction emerging issues” was apt as construction clients are becoming increasingly aware of the need to engage quantity surveyors to vet the cost demands and claims of contractors and service providers to achieve maximum benefit.
