Rivers
Commander Applauds Wike On Peace, Security
The Rivers State Governor, Chief Nyesom Wike, has continued to receive commendations over his determination to promote peace and security in the state.
This was the view of the Omerelu OSPAC chairman, Mr Maxwell Chigozie Assor, when he was reacting to the award of excellence bestowed on him by the Publisher of Weekly Watch Newspaper, Mr Austin Tane, in Omerelu in Ikwerre Local Government Area recently.
Assor said that without the support of the governor the local vigilante formation would not have been possible.
He maintained that Governor Wike’s insistence on local vigilante/ community policing was the main reason why the state is enjoying a great deal of peace.
“Without the Governor’s intervention”, he said, the issue of crime and secret cult- related violence would have become the order- of-the day.
To the newspaper management and the community, he promised not to let them down by topping up his game to ensure maximum security of lives and property of the people was not mortgaged.
Those he listed as other supporters of the peace and security in the area included the Local Government Chairman, Dr Samuel Nwanosike, former Vice Chancellor of Rivers State Univeristy, Prof Blessing C. Didia, Sir ( Dr) Anoski Orduwa among others, as he warned a budding politician in the area to retrace his steps over the security issues of the community in order not to plunge it into the then days of insecurity and cult- related violence.
Also speaking, the Chairman Omerelu Council of Chiefs and Owhor holders, Chief Livinus Didia, said that the recognition done the OSPAC chairman was a worthy gesture.
Didia, a one time registrar at the then Rivers State College of Education, enjoined the OSPAC chairman to see the honour as a clarion call to service rather than mere public display.
He reasoned that recognition of such caliber is not a thing to toy with in that it came from a media outfit.
The Omerelu Chief pointed out that since Assor mounted the leadership mantle of the vigilante group, relative peace is restored in the area.
Others who spoke on the achievement of the Omerelu OSPAC Commander, said he even handled some difficult arbitrations in the community to the amazement of all.
The Tide learnt that the OSPAC boss was in the fore front of the fight against artisan refineries operators and had arrested and handed several suspects to the police recently.
