The Archbishop, Metropolitan and Primate of All Nigeria (Anglican Communion), the Most Rev’d Henry C. Ndukuba, has said that the planned fuel subsidy removal by the Federal Government will further throw the country below the poverty line.
Ndukuba, who stated this in his address at the just-concluded Church of Nigeria Standing Committee Meeting held at St. Andrew’s Church, Rumuobiokani, Diocese of Evo in  Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, noted that the time to remove the subsidy was not now due to the biting economic challenge in the country.
The position of the church, he said, is for the President (of Nigeria) to suspend the idea of subsidy removal and think of how to improve the economy of the country.
According to him, the best option to consider urgently by the leaders of the nation is to rehabilitate all the moribund companies in the country.
“Corruption has killed our refineries. We want the Federal Government to rehabilitate all the moribund companies. Nigeria is becoming a bilitating the country’s moribund refineries in order to enable them refine more crude oil.
He urged the Government to create more sustainable alternatives such as improved and cheap electricity supply that will reduce the use of generators by households and companies.
Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), he continued, would be another alternative that will be less expensive than the Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), adding that it is more environmental friendly.
Meanwhile, he called on the Government to prioritise a shift to clean energy resources, especially in the face of the global withdrawal from fossil fuels.
