Table water producers in Rivers State have commended the administration of Governor Nyesom Wike for its efforts towards ridding the water sector of quacks.
In a water safety Analysis workshop organised by the Ministry of Water Resources And Rural Development in Port Harcourt last week, Vice Chairman, Water Producers Association of Nigeria (WAPAN) Engr. Clifford Okutie, said the association is grateful to the governor for his effort at enhancing the quality of water production in the State.
Okutie decried the influx of quacks into the water production sector, but maintained that the association will support every move by the Governor to sanitise the sector.
One of the participants, Mr. Joel .O. Omere, commended the Governor for checking the hydro carbon element in waters in the state. He said the move will surely save table waters for Rivers people.
Another participant, Mr Hassan Georgewill, regretted that some water producers do not drink their water. He said that some waters are produced in a filthy environment thereby helping to spread waterborne diseases in the state.
Georgewill said the move by the ministry will help to check the trend and ensure standardisation in the water sector. According to him, some waters are produced in a filthy environment and this is not good for the states.
Meanwhile, the state commissioner for Water Resources and Rural Development, Dr. Tamunosisi Gogo JaJa, has given four weeks to some water producers to upgrade or risk being shut down. He said at the expiration of the four weeks, the ministry will name those not qualified to be in the water sector.
He also said that government is committed to ensuring that the water production sector is cleansed of quacks and sub standard water.
