Students Hail VC Over ICT Initiative
Students of Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, Rumuolumini, have eulogised the Acting Vice Chancellor (VC), Prof Okechukwu Onuchukwu, over his resolve to invest in Information and Communication Technology (ICT).
This is sequel to the Acting VC’s new year declaration of his intention to digitally develop the institution to global standards.
Some of the students who spoke with The Tide in Port Harcourt during the week, said the Professor of Economics has shown his worth by the declaration.
One of the students who gave her name as Nwosinichi Assor, said the plans to invest on ICT in the school was timely, noting that ICT is the trending global system in every sector.
“Investing in digitalisation, especially in an academic environment is an excellent idea. Upon full development, it will attract some revenue to the school”, she said.
“I think the idea is an erudite one. The VC was visionary in his decision . That’s why it will be a centre of revenue source to the school soonest”, she said.
While buttressing this stance, another student, who gave his name as Charles, simply said, “it would be disastrous for any 21st century student to graduate without proper ICT knowledge. So, any leader who decides to invest in ICT has done well”, he said.
Others who spoke at random, were unanimous that the most important thing if for the school to have a technical partner that will maintain the system, knowing what they called “the lack of maintenance syndrome” in Nigeria.
They further suggested that the school’s management should sponsor the training of some of its staff in relevant ICT maintenance so as to have a stand-by technical partner.
It would be recalled that the Acting VC of the university, during his New Year message to staff and students, promised to invest massively in ICT development of the University as part of his efforts to turn it into a World class institution.
