The Rivers State Government has said that it was committed to the welfare of legionnaires in the state, saying that it has done significantly well in that regard.
The Secretary to the State Government, Dr Tammy Danangogo stated this while speaking to journalists after a meeting of the 2022 Armed Forces Remembrance Day Celebration Committee members at the Conference Room of the SSG’s Office in Port Harcourt, last Wednesday.
The SSG, represented by the Permanent Secretary, Special Services, Dr Gerorge Nweke, said the state Governor, Chief Nyesom Wike, since 2015, has championed the welfare of the legionnaires in the state, saying that the governor, through his sustained policies, has supported them more than any government across the entire country.
“Our state is champion when it comes to welfare of the legionnaires. The state government has since 2015 supported, and the governor has called for a sustainable process to make sure it is not just annual ritual exercise but a rewarding one”, he stated.
On the preparedness of the state in celebrating this year’s Armed Forces Remembrance Day, Danagogo said that arrangements for the celebration have reached 90percent conclusion, adding that the essence of the meeting was to put finishing touches to the arrangements and planning.
“We have gone far for the programme planning, and 90percent achieved. We came to see the venue for where the grand finale will be held. I can assure you that by the weekend, everything will be done. We are ready and good to celebrate,” he stated.
Danagogo used the opportunity to announce that the Jumat service would hold today at the Central Mosque, Niger Street, Port Harcourt Township at 10am, while the inter-denominational church service would hold at the Catholic Institute of West Africa (CIWA) in Port Harcourt on Sunday, January 9, at 10am prompt.
He added that the ground finale would hold at the Isaac Boro Park, Port Harcourt on January 15, at 10am, and urged members of the public to attend the programmes as scheduled.
Also speaking, the state Chairman of the legion, Barrister Justice Ogburuchichi, commended the state Governor, Chief Nyesom Wike, for his support and passion for the sustenance of legionnaires in the state.
According to him, “it is clear evidence that the governor is funding the scholarship scheme of the association, supporting the legionnaires’ windows in their small scale businesses, as well as supporting my office, which is under the Federal Ministry of Defense.
“It is evident and verifiable, the major support we are receiving is from Rivers State Government”, he stated.
Highlight of the meeting was the visit of members of the planning committee to the Isaac Boro Park venue of the event to ascertain the level of preparedness.
