The Chairman of Bonny Local Government, Dame Anengi Barasua has destroyed a huge illegal refinery in the area as part of government efforts to crush the activities of operators of artisanal refineries unleashing soot in the state.
Barasua led a crack team comprising government security agencies, Ijaw Youth Council officials and LGA political appointees to destroy a live oil bunkering camp at Banigo-Egbelu by Oputumbi Creek in Bonny LGA, last Monday.
The illegal bunkering site, which is said to be the central processing site for defective petroleum produced around the area has been largely responsible for the pollution of the waters, killing of fishes and increased soot being experienced within the precincts of Bonny Local Government Area and its adjoining villages.
Speaking at the site, Barasua said the activities of operators of illegal refineries in the area have caused serious health and environment damage to the people and the environment.
She said that government took the action to destroy the illegal facilities because the operators have constituted themselves into enemies of the state and the people, saying that government was now ready, more than ever before to deal ruthlessly with anyone involved in the illegal act.
It would be recalled that on sighting the crack team, the bunkerers took to their heels, abandoning their work tools which where all recovered and set ablaze.
