Lawyer Warns Police To Stay Away From Civil Matters
A Port Harcourt- based lawyer and civil rights crusader, Chinoye Okoha Esq has warned the police to steer clear from civil matters.
Okoha stated this while speaking with journalists in Port Harcourt at the weekend.
He said there were increasing police involvements in land matters.
The legal practitioner noted that the police were colluding with land grabbers to deny genuine and beneficial land owners of their heritage.
Mr. Okoha stated that the police were trumping up charges against beneficial but poor land owners to intimidate and scare them away from their lands.
He said one Mr. Chinedu Nnanta Amadi of Rukpokwu in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State was arrested recently over a phantom charge of murder.
According to him, the Rivers State Director of Public Prosecution had exonerated the defendant over the murder charge but pathetically the police are using the phantom murder charge to arrest and detain the defendant.
Mr. Okoha urged the Inspector General of Police to monitor closely the activities of the force.
He remarked that the defendant was pursuing genuine claim of ownership in a high court and described his arrest as attempt to silence him permanently.
