A Port Harcourt-based lawyer, Mr. Endurance Akpelu, has said that human rights violations have been on the increase since the inception of President Mohammadu Buhari’s administration.
Mr Akpelu, who stated this while speaking with newsmen in Port Harcourt at weekend, remarked that unless the human rights violations were checked in the country, the respect for the rule of law would continue to diminish.
He said the government at all levels must show sincerity that they have respect for the rule of law.
Mr Akpelu pointed out that the present administration disobeyed court orders with impunity and expressed surprise that it wanted its citizens to be law abiding.
He said the federal government would not care a hoot about disobeying court orders, if it was interested in a particular matter.
He called for training and retraining of law enforcement agents, if the country would apply the tenets of the rule of law.
He said the justice system must recognise the equality of human persons before the law. Mr Akpelu noted that it was only in George Owen’ s Animal Farm that some animals were more equal than others
He stated that the growing restiveness, banditry, armed robbery and a helluva other vicious crimes were indicative of a failed state.
Mr Akpelu pointed out that in a failed state, anything could happen, because the sensibilities of the people had become jaded.
He warned that something must be done urgently to salvage the country from complete fiasco.
