Group Hails Wike, Ariolu’s Steps In Combating Artisanal Refineries

The Obio/Akpor Social Media Group has lauded the Rivers State Governor, Chief Nyesom Wike, for steps being taken to tackle activities of operators of illegal refineries of crude oil by declaring those behind the business wanted and for visiting the illegal sites in Ogbodo and Ibaa communities in Emohua and Ikwerre local government areas of the state.
The group has also commended the Chairman of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, Barrister George Ariolu for the proactive steps taken in combating Kpo-fire business in the area.
In a statement in Port Harcourt, last Saturday, the group frowned at security agencies for the role some of their personnel have played in aiding and providing cover to the operators of illegal refineries in the state.
The statement reads in part, “Being a by-product from the refining of crude oil, medical experts have warned of serious health problems arising for inhaling the soot. Already, there have been reports of increasing respiratory infections among children in the state. It is also apparent that the soot can contaminate water and food.
“Residents have had to cope with having a huge dose of soot on anything not properly covered or left in the open. Many residents of the most affected areas have resorted to wearing nose masks to reduce the amount of soot they breathe in.
“Clampdown on all bunkering activities in the state is not only to end the economic sabotage on the nation but is also in the best interest of the helpless masses, who are daily deluged with soot droppings in their homes and premises.
“The proactive steps taken by Rivers State Governor, Chief Nyesom Wike to declare those behind the illegal business of ‘Kpo-fire’ wanted, apprehending many others, and his visit to some sites of the illegal business has drastically reduced the menace of soot in the state.
“We will not fail to acknowledge efforts of members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, particularly Hon. Martin Amaewhule; and Hon. Michael Chinda; for their role in ending the soot menace in the state.”
The group urged the governor not to spare anyone involved in illegal bunkering and artisanal refinery activities that were aggravating the soot pollution in the state.
