Barasua Hails .1m Books Donation For Schools, Inspects Projects In Bonny
The Chairman of Bonny Local Government Area, Dame Anengi Barasua, has commended the donation of 100,000-books to schools in the area by Evomec Global Services Limited (EGSL), describing the company as an exceptional organisation that cares about its host community, stressing that companies who uphold the interest of Bonny people would continue to enjoy the collaboration of the local government authority.
Barasua, who was represented by the Vice Chairman of Bonny Local Government Council, Wariopusenibo Omoni Long John, at a brief handover ceremony at EGSL Operational Base, Bonny, last Friday, further encouraged the donor and staff members not to relent in their goodwill and services.
The LG chairman said that “there are companies on the Island that have more than EGSL and do less Corporate Social Responsibilities (CSR), but Evomec has remained committed to community welfare.”
She added that the donation was in line with her vision of capacity building, adding that the books would be enough to distribute across the villages and towns of Bonny Local Government Area.
Earlier, the Project Manager of EGSL, Mr Toye Fadare, who represented the company’s management, said they had been blessed by Bonny Local Government, saying that the donation was necessary to reciprocate the benefits on the island.
He said the idea of the 100,000-book donation which has just been implemented for the second time, was to alleviate the educational needs in Bonny, noting that the gesture was the little out of the many that was being planned for its host community.
Meanwhile, the Chairman of Bonny Local Government, Dame Anengi Barasua, has embarked on on-the-spot inspection tour of select government facilities in the area.
At the Bonny Heritage Centre, Barasua discovered the presence of a Pentecostal Church, and directed for an immediate meeting afterwards to understand their terms of occupancy.
While inspecting the Bonny Cottage Hospital, she discovered illegal occupants, and frowned at the abuse of government property, directing relocation as well as other remedial actions.
She also inspected the compliance to the sanitation effort started off in December, 2021, at the Bonny Coal Beach, where she found pockets of defaulters, and warned them to desist from the indiscriminate hawking, illegal structures and defacing of the area.
At the Abattoir, where fresh fish merchants now stay to do their business, the chairman commended the traders for complying with the government directive to keep the area clean, and donated some cash token to support their business.
Also at the Bonny LGA ICT Centre, Barasua observed with dismay how facilities, including computers, desks and other items had been looted and the environment left in disarray.
She expressed readiness to rehabilitate the centre with a regulation framework to avoid a repeat of the abuse.
