The Convener of the Fight Against Corruption in the Judiciary (FIACIJ), Mr Bayo Akinlade, has urged legal practitioners in the country to join in positively repositioning the Nigerian legal system.
Akinlade told The Tide source in Lagos yesterday that just as there has been a call for self-cleansing in the judiciary in the past years, it is important that such cleansing continues in the coming year.
He, therefore, underscored the need for every Nigerian lawyer to play a role in ensuring a rebirth of the legal system.
“In the past years, I had urged the judiciary to focus on cleansing itself of corrupt elements, and attract more funding for a better welfare package for judges, magistrates and support staff.
“I had also urged on the need for a better physical and IT infrastructure for effectiveness in this computer age, as well as ridding the system of corruption.
“Although in 2021 the legal system had experienced some lapses, same can be corrected in the coming year if everyone contributes his own quota to enhancing the legal system
“If you are a person of influence and possess the means to change the trajectory of our judiciary and legal profession, I will appeal that you try your best to impact positively by adding value to the judiciary.
“We can do this by saying no to collecting bribes, no to giving bribes, and no to extortion. We all have a part to play; our children and unborn children are depending on us to make things right.
“In 2022, we all need to make sacrifices to redeem our justice sector and promote equity, fairness and the rule of law,” he said.
