Rivers State Government has reiterated its commitment to promote and encourage youth sports programmes in the State, especially basketball.
Permement Secretary Ministry of Sports in the State,Sir, Honour Sirawoo, disclosed this while fielding questions from sports journalists, shortly after the exhibition game of Team Rivers U-15 basketball players,  at Basketball Court, Niger/Bende Streets in  Old Port Harcourt township.
Sirawoo, who is also the National President of Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) stated that he was impressed with the quality of play demonstrated by the youth, saying that as government, they will encourage them to ensure that the State continues to dominate in youth basketball in the country.
“ I saw them play in illorin, I thought what I saw was a fluke, even though they did so well for winning the gold medal, but what I saw here today was a pure  reflection of what I saw in illorin.
This means they are well tutored. For us as a State, we will continue to encourage them,” Sirawoo said.
According to him, no doubt the State will generate talents from the U-15 players following their victory at the just concluded National Youth Games (NYG) in illorin.
“ It means we are going to do well, we are going to win more medals from it, we are going to generate talents, build a family from it and create wealth from it,” he stated.
