The Ministry of Youth and Sports Development has said the twelve D’Tigress players who represented Nigeria at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo have been paid their part of the Adopt-A-Sport initiative money,
The sports ministry had raised $230,000 from four banks to boost the preparations of the men and women’s basketball teams ahead of the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan.
According to a statement from the ministry on Friday, documents from the Central Bank of Nigeria confirmed that each of the 12 D’Tigress players in the Olympic Games in Tokyo have received $9,500 each.
The statement added that a number of the players had acknowledged receipt of the money, while many of them have not confirmed.
“Checks with the Central Bank of Nigeria also revealed that the Nigeria Basketball Federation’s domiciliary account had been debited to reflect payments to D’Tigress players, while the balance of the $130,000 remains for the men basketball players,” the ministry said.
“The checks also reveal that the processes for these payments commenced on the 14th of October, 2021, about the same time the federal ministry of youth and sports development had assured the team that the fulfilment of the monetary obligations to them was in the works.”
