Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar (UNICAL), Prof. Florence Obi, yesterday, commended the institution’s Students Union for maintaining peace on campus.
Obi, who gave the commendation in Calabar during a thanksgiving service by the students at the UNICAL Chapel of Redemption (UCOR) also promised that she would carry out her assignment with the fear of God.
The VC said that she was grateful to God for giving her the calibre of students in the present administration of the Students Union.
The Tidesports recalls that there was tension in the university in the aftermath of the increase in school fees which resulted to the invitation of security agencies to maintain law and order.
Obi disclosed that many people tried to persuade the students to kick against the fee increase but the prayers and counsel of the church prevailed and there was calm.
“Many tried to use the Students Union Government (SUG)  against the school but due to the prayers of the chaplain and UCOR, the union was able to shun all forms of persuasion by people.
“Henceforth, let us join hands together to build UNICAL as we have no other university to call our own.
“I, however, promise before God, as the VC of this university, I will do everything in the fear of God,” she maintained.
In his remark, the Chaplain of UCOR, Dr Joseph Ushie, called on the congregation to pray for the VC as she steps forward to do what is right for the university.
“Many of us think leadership is easy so we sit back and criticise until we are given the role of the leader then we will understand how difficult it is to lead,” he said.
In his sermon entitled “Rivers of Flowing Water”, Evangelist Victor Agor, urged the VC to always speak the truth and do her best to raise the image of the school in order to make it one of the best in Nigeria.
He called on the lecturers to teach with the fear of God, ensuring that the students learn and not just sit back collect their salaries.
He also called on the students not to be lazy in their pursuit of knowledge as good lecturers love serious, hardworking students who are ready to learn.
